Keyboard Shortcuts

Default keyboard shortcuts, multiple independent profiles, and advanced search.

CmdTab is designed to be fully navigable via the keyboard. While it replaces the default macOS app switcher, it significantly expands the available controls and navigation methods.

Multiple Independent Shortcuts

Unlike the default macOS switcher which only allows a single Command + Tab shortcut, CmdTab allows you to set up multiple independent profiles, each with its own shortcut and filter rules.

  • Profile 1: Command + Tab to show all windows across all spaces.
  • Profile 2: Option + Tab to show only windows on the current display.
  • Profile 3: Control + Tab to show only minimized or hidden windows.

You can configure these in Settings > Shortcuts.

If you have dozens of windows open, tabbing through them can be tedious. CmdTab introduces Advanced Search directly into the switcher.

  1. Activate CmdTab (e.g., hold Command and press Tab).
  2. Keep holding the modifier key (Command) so the switcher stays open.
  3. Simply start typing the name of the app or the window title (e.g., "Safari" or "Project Plan").
  4. The switcher will instantly filter down to matching windows. Press Enter to focus the selected window.

Window Controls

You can manipulate windows directly from the CmdTab interface without ever bringing them to the foreground:

  • Close Window (W): Closes the currently highlighted window.
  • Quit App (Q): Completely quits the application of the highlighted window.
  • Minimize (M): Minimizes the highlighted window to the dock.
  • Hide App (H): Hides all windows of the selected application.
